Africa-Press – Angola. The next president of the African Union Commission (AUC), to be elected in February 2025, should be proposed by the East African Region, when Angola will assume, for the first time, leadership of the African Union (AU).
The decision was taken at the last Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, held on Friday, in Addis Ababa, in which the Angolan delegation was led by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities, Domingos Custódio Vieira Lopes.
According to a press release from the Permanent Representation of Angola to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the meeting also decided that the Northern Region should nominate the candidate for the position of vice-president of the AUC , executive body of the African Union.
The other regions of Africa (Central, Southern and Western) must nominate 2 (two) candidates, at least, for the 6 commissioner positions of the continental organization, respecting the principle of inter-regional rotation and gender proportionality, adds the note.
Since the transition from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU) in 2002, 5 (five) elections have been held for members of the commission. The first was for the mandate from 2003 to 2008. The current one, elected in 2021, is expected to complete her mandate in 2025.
The Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Miguel César Bembe, is also Angola’s ambassador to Ethiopia and was part of the Angolan delegation at the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council.
