Africa-Press – Angola. The general secretary of the Malanje Provincial Basketball Association (APBM), Pedro Campos, expressed confidence in the National Team’s recapture of the Afrobasket trophy, which the country is hosting in August in the provinces of Luanda and Namibe.
According to the sports director, the current national team boasts a team of talented young players who, if they do everything they can, can lift the trophy once again and regain the dominance they lost in 2013.
“We have a team that I consider good, but it needs a lot of determination and teamwork to win,” he emphasized, explaining that national basketball has lost some of its quality recently.
Regarding the organization, he considered it appropriate for Angola to host the event, as it has the capacity, although compared to the 2007 competition, four pavilions had been prepared, compared to two this year. However, he lamented the failure to rehabilitate and repurpose other basketball stadiums, which would have been profitable in terms of crowding and future revenue.
“We have our Palanca Negra pavilion in Malanje, which would be great if it were also rehabilitated to host games for this event,” he emphasized.
On the other hand, the secretary of the Malanje APBM highlighted the benefits the country will gain from hosting the championship, as it will gain some visibility in the African and global arena, in addition to the profitability of the tourism and hotel sector, with the reception of teams and basketball fans from other countries.
The Angolan national team is in Group C of Afrobasket2025, taking place from the 12th to the 24th of next month in the provinces of Luanda and Namibe, alongside South Sudan, Guinea, and Libya.
So far, the Angolan team has played four preparation games, with a LEB Ouro team and with the Chilean and Argentine national teams, the latter of which they lost to last Monday (28), by 73-79 and will face again next Friday (1).
