Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) carried out, this Monday, the assessment of the degree of preparation of the 147th Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union (IPU), to be held in Luanda, between 23 and 27 October of this year.
During the meeting, guided by the President of the AN, Carolina Cerqueira, the coordinators of the Sub Commissions of the Organizing Commission passed on detailed information regarding the
candidacy process for the office of president of the body, the state of preparation of the event and technical issues.
According to the President of the AN, Carolina Cerqueira, so far, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania have presented their candidacy.
According to the statutes of the IPU, any country can apply until the eve of the General Assembly.
The principle of rotation recommends that Africa should have preference in the race for the next presidency of the parliamentary organization.
To date, the presidency of the UIP has been assumed by Deputy Duarte Pacheco, from the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic, who ends his mandate in October, with the election of the new president.
Angola will be the first African country to host a general assembly of the IPU, with around 1,500 deputies from all over the world.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union is made up of 178 national parliaments and 12 regional assemblies. It is currently the main parliamentary interlocutor of the United Nations.
