Angola and Namibia reinforce strategies to combat cross-border crimes

Africa-Press – Angola. Officials from the justice administration bodies of Cunene province (Angola) and Oshana and Omusati regions (Namibia) reinforced, this Friday, the strategies to combat cross-border crimes, during a bilateral meeting held in Oshakati.

The information was released in a note from the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Cunene, stressing that the strategy includes measures against human trafficking, vehicle and fuel smuggling, theft and robberies along the border and migration issues.

The meeting was coordinated by the Deputy Prosecutor of the Republic of Cunene, AmeĢrico Cassoma, and on the Namibian side the commander of the Police in the Oshana region, commissioner Zacarias Naftali Lungameni.

On the occasion, the director of the Criminal Investigation Service in Cunene, deputy commissioner Caca Wamatende, highlighted the need for greater speed in the exchange of refugees (fugitive prisoners), who, in an attempt to escape police surveillance, are detained in Namibian territory and vice versa. .

The sub-commissioner also addressed the phenomenon of smuggling of vehicles from Namibia, which are sold to Angolans, and therefore requests the intervention of the Namibian Consulate in Ondjiva, in order to determine the supposed owners.

He also requested the intervention of the Consulate, in cases of delivery of means stolen in Namibia and recovered in Angola, in order to guarantee the propriety of the owner, among other matters.

For his part, the Commander of the Oshana Region, Commissioner Zacarias Naftali Lungameni, considered it essential to share information on crimes that occur along the common border.

After the meeting, the Namibian police handed over a stolen firearm at the Border Guard police station in Ombadja, Cunene province, and recovered in that region of Namibia.

The province of Cunene shares 460 kilometers of border with the Republic of Namibia, of which 340 are on land and 120 are on rivers.
