Africa-Press – Angola. The Republic of Angola resumed its presidency of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, a strategic body specializing in continental peace and security, this Wednesday (3).
According to a note, the country’s appointment to lead this African Union body this September occurred during the Peace and Security Council meeting dedicated to briefings by the presidents of the body for the months of June and August 2025 to the member states of the organization’s Permanent Representatives Committee.
Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the Republic of Angola, the Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Miguel Bembe, emphasized that this event occurred at the same time that the country holds the rotating presidency of the organization.”In fact, upon consulting the archives, I cannot recall a similar occurrence ever occurring in the history of the continental organization,” Ambassador Miguel Bembe emphasized.
The diplomat assured that Angola assumes these increased responsibilities with a sense of duty and profound respect, and is fully prepared to contribute to the advancement of the Common Continental Agenda, toward the definitive achievement of peace and stability on the continent, toward a prosperous Africa firmly committed to development and integration processes.
Miguel Bembe emphasized that the AU Peace and Security Council plays a central role in promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent. The diplomat also stated that it was conceived as a permanent decision-making body for conflict prevention, management, and resolution, embodying the collective will of Member States.
As a fundamental pillar of the African Peace and Security Architecture, Miguel Bembe added that the Peace and Security Council is fully committed to consolidating peace, post-conflict reconstruction, and promoting democratic governance, essential elements for lasting stability.
Furthermore, the Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union spoke of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee, which he said occupies a strategic place in the organization’s institutional architecture, acting as a link between political decisions taken at the highest level and their concrete implementation within the Union’s structures.
He emphasized that this important body serves as a permanent platform for exchange, consultation, and negotiation among Member States, whose action strengthens their institutional cohesion, thus facilitating better coordination of the political decisions they make and the building of an African consensus on the major challenges we face.
Miguem Bembe, who had the honor of opening and closing the meeting, emphasized that regular consultation between the two bodies has proven to be not only useful, but also absolutely essential in strengthening collective action on peace and security.
The Republic of Angola already led the African Union Peace and Security Council in July 2024.
