Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan center João Fernandes is returning to Sporting de Portugal, two years after the Portuguese club announced on its official website.

After winning his 12th Afrobasket title, which took place in Angola in the cities of Moçâmedes and Luanda from August 12 to 24, the 32-year-old Angolan international has represented UD Oliveirense for the past two seasons.

After his stints in the 2019/2020 and 2022/23 seasons, he won a championship, three Portuguese Cups, two Hugo dos Santos Cups, and two Super Cups.

The player made it known that he is at a club he knows well and has been happy recently.

“I’ve had very happy moments with this emblem on my chest and I miss it. I’ll give my best as I always have,” he said.

António Coelho, Sporting’s basketball coordinator, justified the decision as someone with experience and quality.

“He was an African champion, he has a lot of experience in our league, he was a champion at Sporting. He did a bit of everything, despite being a player who plays inside, but he can also shoot from outside; he’s a team player,” he said.

At Sporting, João Fernandes will reunite with coach Luis Magalhães, former coach of 1o de Agosto and the Angolan national team.

Sporting has nine national championship titles, the most recent of which was in 2021/22.

Former National Team guards Manuel Sousa “Necas”, Paulo Macedo, and Milton Guimarães have already played for the green and white team from the Portuguese capital.
