Angola begins "fight" for unprecedented Paris Paralympic Games

Africa-Press – Angola. Athletes Pedro Adão and Mauro Luís, both in the 49 kg category, will begin competing in the Paraweightlifting World Championship on Tuesday, taking place from the 17th to the 25th of March, in Cairo (Egypt), qualifying for Paris`2024.

To this end, the national team, led by coach António Baltazar, went to the stage of the adapted weightlifting world championship on Sunday and today carries out medical examinations and weigh-ins.

After Angola’s first presence at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games, with athletics, the possibility now opens for a second national sport to compete in the event dedicated to disabled athletes from all over the world.

Pedro Adão was a bronze medalist in the 2022 edition, in Dubai, while Mauro Luís was sixth in the African Championship, in 2014, in Congo Brazzaville.

Pedro Adão is ranked 16th in the African Ranking, while Mauro Luís is ranked 19th.

The Paralympic Games will be held from August 28th to September 8th this year, in Paris (France), bringing together at least 4,400 of the best disabled athletes.

With ten years of practice (2024), Paraweightlifting is practiced in Angola in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Bié, Cuanza Norte, Cuanza Sul and Huambo, among 26 athletes, both sexes.
