Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Industry and Commerce defended, on Tuesday, in Vienna (Austria), the importance of implementing systematic mechanisms with the aim of promoting industrial development and digital inclusion in African countries.

Rui Minguês Oliveira was speaking during the 20th General Conference of the United Nations Development Organization (UNIDO), under the theme “Fair Globalization: Innovative Solutions for the Industry of Tomorrow”, which started on Monday, 27th, and should last until Friday -Friday, December 1st.

The minister initially highlighted the obstacles faced in the post-pandemic economic recovery, as well as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, such as armed conflicts, massive migrations for security reasons or as a result of poverty in the global South, pandemics, droughts, among other factors that affect the world economy.

In the words of Rui Minguês, “industrialization and digitalization can only be successful if they are based on an effective structure of consumer markets at a global level and aimed at eliminating subsidies that distort the international competitiveness of developing economies”.

Minguês highlighted, on the other hand, the importance of the role played by UNIDO in the execution of projects in Africa, with emphasis on the Third Decade of Industrial Development in Africa (IDDA III).

According to him, it is crucial for the acquisition of important resources necessary in the continent’s industrialization process.

This year’s work agenda is predominantly made up of issues related to the energy transition and the flow of goods and services, due to the context marked by current global crises of various kinds, caused by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and armed conflicts. The aim is to open new paths towards sustainability, digital inclusion and economic resilience.

The minister also highlighted that efforts to accelerate industrialization must be based on the effective opening of global consumer markets and the elimination of subsidy policies that distort the international competitiveness of the economies of developing countries.

Further on, Rui Minguês Oliveira called for joint efforts to decarbonize industries, investing in renewable energy, especially green hydrogen, to minimize the effects of climate change, in order to protect future generations.

Second, Minguês, Angola has expressed its concern about the effects caused by climate change, with energy transition as a priority point on its agenda.

On the sidelines of the Conference, the Minister of Commerce and Industry held several meetings, namely with the general director of Unido, Gerd Müller, and with some heads of delegations from the United Member States, within the scope of strengthening cooperation relations in matters linked to the development of sustainable industries.
