Africa-Press – Angola. Angola was elected this Tuesday as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 triennium during the 18th plenary session of the UN General Assembly, held at the organization’s headquarters in New York.
According to a press release sent , the country received 179 votes in favor and three abstentions, securing its fourth seat on the body of 47 member states, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
Angola will be represented by Ambassador Ana Maria de Oliveira, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva.
During her new term, Angola intends to strengthen multilateral human rights mechanisms, promote the implementation of international treaties, and intensify the defense of the rights of vulnerable people.
The country is a founding member of the Human Rights Council, established in 2006, having already served two consecutive terms (2007-2013) and another from 2018-2020.
Angola returns to the body in a challenging international context marked by increasing violations and inequalities, reaffirming its commitment to preserving human dignity and promoting fundamental rights.
In July of this year, the Human Rights Council adopted Angola’s report on the situation of human rights, highlighting the institutional progress made in the country.
The country has a national human rights structure, led by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, and guided by the National Human Rights Strategy, aligned with international commitments.
It is a party to seven international treaties and has ratified five fundamental UN and African Union conventions, including the Convention against Torture, the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
In the African group (Group A), South Africa, Egypt, and Mauritius were also elected.
The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, addressing violations and making recommendations to member states.
