Africa-Press – Angola. Angola is participating in the 34th General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which began on Monday and runs until December 3 in London. The assembly will discuss the future of the maritime transport sector.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Transport sent on Tuesday, the General Assembly has an important work agenda for the sector.

The statement adds that the 175 IMO member states, including Angola, will decide the future direction of maritime transport in the coming decades. One of the key points under discussion is the budget approval process, in which members will debate and vote on the organization’s budget for the next two years. This is a critical step in financing the IMO’s global programs and initiatives.

The meeting will also elect the new IMO Council, the executive body that governs the organization between Assembly sessions.

Regarding enhanced maritime security, the assembly will discuss safety at sea, protection against piracy attacks, and cybersecurity in navigation to strengthen international standards.

Another topic of discussion will be environmental challenges, which has generated significant anticipation due to the environmental impact of maritime transport.

The Angolan delegation is headed by Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime Affairs, and Ports Rui Carreira and includes specialized technicians from the Ministry of Transport.

The event kicked off this week at the IMO headquarters in London and will run until December 3.

The 34th General Assembly is one of the most important events on the global maritime calendar.
