Africa-Press – Angola. Angola national swimming team failed to qualify for the finals in the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley categories at the African Youth Games on Tuesday. The hosts’ best result was 11th place, achieved at the Alvalade pool.

In the men’s 50 meters, Santiago Guimarães (11th) clocked 25.34 and Carlos Fernandes (17th) had a time of 26.15, while in the women’s category, Maria Parimbello finished 17th with a time of 29.67, and Chelsea Vunge occupied 22nd place with a time of 30.50.

In the 200-meter individual medley, Mariana Lima finished in 13th place with a time of 2:56.99, and Williams Nguvo was 19th (2:46.62). However, Rhanya Santo, in the 800 meters freestyle, while Santiago Guimarães (1,500 m) will compete in four direct finals.

The two athletes advanced directly from the heats to the final, based on the best times in all heats.

The direct final is a more common system in shorter races or competitions with fewer athletes, without semi-finals, where the focus is on immediate qualification for the medal competition (Final A).

During five days of competition, Angolan swimming obtained two bronze medals.

The competition is dominated by South Africa with 50 medals (27 gold, 16 silver, 7 bronze), followed by Algeria with 17 (4 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze) and Tunisia with 12 (2 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze).
