Africa-Press – Angola. Angola hosts, from the 1st to the 7th of July, the 55th Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The event will take place under the motto “The role of parliaments in promoting renewable energy policies in the SADC region and creating a single Regional Energy Market”.
It should be noted that the SADC region has faced an electricity crisis in recent years due to demographic growth and the considerable increase in industrial infrastructure in the region.
According to a press release, deputies from the 15 SADC member countries will analyze strategies and actions in different areas, in accordance with their constitutional mandates in the legislative domain, supervision and control, resource allocation, population education; of the benefits and advantages of renewable energy, both for the environment and for the economy.
In the field of regional cooperation, parliamentarians want to promote and facilitate regional cooperation and integration using new technologies, creating a favorable environment to attract both local and international investments.
The creation of the Single Energy Market, according to the vision of member countries, could accelerate economic well-being and the eradication of poverty in Southern Africa, through cooperation and harmonization of regional policies and strategies.
The FP-SADC is a body composed of deputies from the national parliaments of the Member States.
Created by the SADC Summit in September 1997, the Forum is composed of the President of the Session and a maximum of five representatives elected by the National Parliament of each Member State.
The aim of this forum is to provide a platform to support and improve regional integration through parliamentary participation and promote best practices in terms of the role of parliaments in regional integration and cooperation.
