Angola: New Phase of Political Struggle - Lukamba Gato

Africa-Press – Angola. The political struggle in Angola has clearly entered a new phase, perhaps one of the most significant since the end of the armed conflict. It’s no longer just about the traditional MPLA vs. UNITA dichotomy, much less about disputes between parties or leaders.

The political scene is being redesigned with new actors: the people and organized civil society.

The city of Luanda, now paralyzed by a taxi drivers’ strike protesting rising fuel prices, is just the latest example of this new reality.

On Saturdays, marches organized by associations, civic movements, indignant mothers, young activists, and workers from various sectors became frequent.

The streets that were once spaces of silence and fear have become stages for expressing people’s frustration and demands for rights.

This awakening is more than resistance: it is a clear sign of the maturation of civic consciousness.

The fear that for decades clouded collective action is giving way to informed boldness, to a more demanding and participatory citizenship.

Unfortunately, the regime insists on interpreting this new phenomenon as manipulation of the opposition or instigation by “external forces.” This reductive interpretation is not only dangerous but profoundly disrespectful to the Angolan people, who today are no longer satisfied with empty promises or the use of the “external enemy” as a permanent excuse.

The truth is that the political struggle in Angola is no longer just between parties. The real tension is now between power and the people. Between a party-state that refuses to listen and a society that has decided to speak out, and speak out loud.

The maturity of a democracy is also measured, among other factors, by the state’s ability to listen to its citizens. Insisting on authoritarianism, repression, and the discrediting of all forms of expression is to swim against the tide of history.

The people have woken up and will never go back to sleep.
