Angola Reaffirms Political Commitment to Fighting Corruption

Africa-Press – Angola. The Inspector General of State Administration, João Francisco, reaffirmed on Monday, in Doha, the role and firm political and institutional commitment of President João Lourenço in fighting corruption and promoting public integrity as a central axis of State policies and the national reform agenda.

Speaking at the opening session of the plenary of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (COSP-UNCAC), the official highlighted that Angola has assumed public integrity as a strategic priority, with consequences in the adoption of legal, institutional and operational instruments aimed at preventing, detecting and repressing corruption.

João Francisco, according to a press release sent, heads the Angolan delegation to the 11th COSP Conference, which takes place from the 15th to the 19th of November, in the capital of Qatar, bringing together signatory states, intergovernmental organizations, representatives of civil society and the private sector, with a focus on the prevention of corruption, criminalization of crimes, international cooperation, asset recovery and technical assistance.

According to the inspector general, with the approval of Presidential Decree No. 169/24, of 19 July, Angola implemented the National Strategy for the Prevention and Repression of Corruption, a public policy instrument that structures the axes of prevention, detection and repression, ensuring coordinated action between the different bodies involved in the fight against corruption.

In the legislative and normative domain, he highlighted the approval and updating of fundamental diplomas, with emphasis on the Law on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, the Regime of Administrative and Patrimonial Responsibility of Public Agents, the Internal Control System, as well as reforms in the field of Public Procurement and State Finances.

The Angolan delegation includes, in addition to the General Inspectorate of State Administration (IGAE), representatives from the Attorney General’s Office, the Civil House of the President of the Republic, the Financial Information Unit, the National Bank of Angola and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, institutions considered key in implementing the anti-corruption policy adopted by the Angolan Government.

The UNCAC Conference of States Parties constitutes the main policy-making body of the only legally binding anti-corruption treaty on a global scale, meeting biennially with the aim of supporting Member States in implementing the Convention, providing political guidance and adopting resolutions aimed at strengthening anti-corruption actions.
