Africa-Press – Angola. Angola was officially invited to witness on Saturday the signing of the new framework agreement for peace in the DRC, namely between the government and the rebel group M23, in Doha, Qatar.

According to a press release from the Angolan diplomatic mission in Qatar, ambassador António Coelho Ramos da Cruz was present at the signing of the new framework agreement for peace in the DRC, after several months of direct negotiations between the parties to the conflict.

The note adds that the round of negotiations, which allowed the signing of this Agreement, was mediated by Qatar, the USA and the African Union, with the presence of Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Massad Boulos, special envoy of the USA, the director of the Office of the Executive Secretary of the African Union and the African Diplomatic Corps accredited in Qatar.

Coincidentally, the 9th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) took place this Saturday in Kinshasa, DRC, with Angola handing over the presidency of the body to Democratic Congo.

On the occasion, as a summary, the outgoing president of the body, Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, pointed out among the gains, the approval of the ICGLR Roadmap for the pacification of the East of the DRC, accompanied by the Joint Plan for resolving the security crisis and normalization of relations between the DRC and Rwanda (the latter accused, by the former, of supporting the M23).

He also noted that DRC now assumes the presidency of the ICGLR at a demanding time, as it continues to face an armed conflict in its territory, but expressed confidence that balance and a sense of responsibility will prevail in the exercise of functions.

The ICGLR is made up of Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia, which meet at a summit, at the level of Heads of State and Government, every two years.
