Africa-Press – Angola. The chairman of the Angolan Athletics Federation (FAA), Bernardo João, announced on Monday, in Luanda, a prize of 10 million kwanzas for each of the male and female winners of the yearend footrace duibbed “Saint Silvester”, which will take place on December 31st in the capital.

The prize money for the winners of this special edition, to be held as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, celebrated on November 11, represents an increase of seven million kwanzas compared to the three million kwanzas distributed in the 2024 edition.

According to the source who spoke about the organization of the 10-km race, a possible increase in prizes for second, third place and other categories is still being studied.

For the 2025 Saint Silvester road race – with a total estimated value of 800 million kwanzas – the participation of 10,000 competitors is expected, while three thousand long-distance runners are expected for the family march.

Registrations began on Wednesday (10) through the official Tchaco Sport website.

According to the source who spoke regarding the organization of the 10-km footrace event, a possible increase in prizes for second, third place and other categories is still being studied.

João Bernardo announced that Cabo Verde will make its debut and that competitors from the countries of Region 5, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau have been notified.

The Djibouti long-distance runner, Honi Hirsi (male category) and the Kenyan Ms Valentine Jepkoech (female category) are the current champions.

The São Silvestre race in Luanda is the most traditional athletics event in Angola.

It is organized annually by the Angolan Athletics Federation (FAA) on December 31st, the race starts at Mutamba Square and finishes at Coqueiros Stadium, attracting national and international athletes.

The race has been held since 1954 in honor of the Angolan long-distance runner Demóstenes de Almeida, the main pioneer of the sport in the country.
