Africa-Press – Angola. Minister of Foreign Affairs Téte António highlighted this Monday the role of Angolan diplomacy in the Liberation Struggle, as a voice of denunciation against colonialism and a decisive instrument in the recognition of Angola’s independence in 1975.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Conference on the Role of Angolan Diplomacy in the Conquest and Preservation of National Independence, the head of diplomacy stated that it was a diplomacy of courage and conviction that allowed the world to recognize, on November 11, 1975, the birth of a new sovereign African state.

The minister recalled that the first years of Independence coincided with the turbulent times of the Cold War, marked by the division of the world into ideological blocs, a context that posed great challenges to the young Republic of Angola. He emphasized that the country faced complex situations that required political wisdom and diplomatic skill to safeguard its sovereignty and gain international recognition, establishing itself early on as a regional and global player.

Téte António also highlighted that, in the southern region, Angola played a decisive role in the liberation process of Namibia and the end of the Apartheid regime in South Africa, emphasizing that the victory of Cuito Cuanavale was crucial to the release of Nelson Mandela and the advent of South African democracy in 1994.

“It was the triumph of African solidarity and diplomacy committed to peace and justice,” he emphasized. The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall brought a new wind to the world stage, marking the beginning of a cycle of democratization and state reconstruction in Africa, in which Angola has actively participated, consolidating its diplomatic presence and its commitment to peace and development.

Over the two-day conference, topics will be discussed such as the contribution of Angolan diplomacy to achieving national independence, the achievements of Angolan foreign policy in pacification and conflict resolution in Africa, the challenges of the new global geopolitics, and Angola’s strategic positioning.

Distinguished career diplomats and experts who have followed Angola’s historical and diplomatic journey throughout the 50 years of national independence will participate as speakers.
