Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, reaffirmed today, in Soyo (Zaire), that the Angolan Government is following, with great attention and apprehension, the growing deterioration of peace and security in different parts of the planet, with emphasis on the African continent .
Speaking at the event alluding to the 47th anniversary of the Angolan Navy (MGA), marked this Monday (10), the Head of State said that the deterioration of peace, allied to terrorism and insurgencies of different motivations, threaten the populations and the fragile economies of African states.
He noted that some of the immediate and most visible consequences of armed conflicts are, in addition to the high number of deaths, the appalling rate of internally displaced people, refugees in neighboring countries, emigrants manipulated by human trafficking networks, as well as the increase in hunger, poverty and misery.
“The situation is not better in other parts of the world”, said João Lourenço, who, in this particular, referred to the vulnerable situation in the Middle East, where the non-implementation of the United Nations resolutions on the need to create the State of Palestine to cohabit peacefully with Israel, has been aggravating the conflict.
With regard to the situation of conflicts in Europe, the Angolan statesman referred to the emergence of the war carried out by Russia against Ukraine, a sovereign state, with serious consequences for the world.
“These and other conflicts that proliferate around the world only make the urgent need to reform the United Nations, in particular its Security Council and the financial institutions of Bretton Woods, emerging from the end of the Second World War”, even more pressing. expressed.
For President João Lourenço these assumptions no longer reflect the political, economic, demographic and other realities of today’s world.
He said that Africa and Latin America claim the right to occupy seats as permanent members of the UN Security Council, not only to defend the rights of their respective peoples, but to be an active part of the decisions to be taken on the global affairs of the planet, such as the peace and security, food and energy, public health, international trade, climate and environmental protection.
The central act of the celebrations of the 47 years of existence of the MGA, which took place in Soyo, province of Zaire, was marked by the inauguration of the Naval Base of this branch, under the guidance of the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces, João Lourenço .
The MGA is the naval branch of the Angolan Armed Forces, whose mission is to defend territorial integrity and national sovereignty at sea, protection of maritime communication lines, search and rescue, navigation safety, fisheries inspection, protection of sea and support for the country’s foreign policy.
Created on July 10, 1976, after the completion of the first Naval Specialists course, given by Cuban instructors at the Luanda Naval Base, the genesis of the MGA can be traced back to November 11, 1975, when a group of Angolan fighters took over of the installations of the colonial Navy, due to its abandonment by the Portuguese authorities.
