Angolan Republic Council Urges Civic Orderliness

Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Council of the Republic called on the population this Monday to maintain a civic and orderly stance, guided by “the responsible and conscious exercise” of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution and the law.

The final statement issued at the extraordinary meeting of the Council of the Republic, convened by Angolan President João Lourenço, with the single point on the public security situation in Angola, also calls on citizens to respect the authorities, avoiding “the spread of misinformation on digital platforms” to safeguard the well-being of all.

The extraordinary meeting aimed to analyze the events that occurred between July 28 and August 1 in the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Malanje, Benguela, Cuango, Icolo and Bengo, marked “by acts of vandalism, disorder, insurgency against the forces of order and security, as well as looting of public and private establishments”.

The document emphasizes that the members of this advisory body to the President of the Republic were informed that the public security situation in the country is stable and that the services temporarily interrupted due to acts of vandalism “are now fully operational, despite the persistence of misinformation and disguised incitement to violence on social media, a scenario that tends to create panic and a feeling of insecurity among the population.”

“The Council of the Republic encourages defense and security bodies to continue with measures to guarantee public order, tranquility and security and the maintenance of social peace,” the statement concludes.

The Council of the Republic comprises the Vice-President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly, the Attorney General of the Republic, leaders of political parties with seats in parliament, the Vice-President of the MPLA, the ruling party, and individuals from civil society.

Angola has seen acts of vandalism, violence and looting in the last week, following a strike called by taxi drivers in protest against rising fuel prices and, consequently, public transport fares.

This morning, Angolan National Police spokesman Mateus Rodrigues, in a report on the country’s public security situation, assured that it remains stable, with institutions functioning normally and the free movement of people and goods.

According to Mateus Rodrigues, particularly in Luanda, the capital of Angola, “the situation is equally calm, traffic is moving quite normally and the presence of taxis and public transport is visible.”

“The Angolan National Police reiterates that there is no reason for concern and assures that it is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, respecting the rights, freedoms and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola,” said Mateus Rodrigues.

The spokesperson for the Angolan National Police urged citizens to be wary of false alarms, especially on social media and digital platforms, whose aim is to spread misinformation and create feelings of fear and insecurity within communities, he warned.

During the riots, according to data from the National Police, 30 deaths were recorded, more than 200 injuries and more than 1,500 arrests.
