Africa-Press – Angola. Fifteen thousand families in the provinces of Bengo, Cuanza Norte and Malanje have benefited, in the last five years, from the project to Support Artisanal Fishing (AFAP).

Co-financed by the Angolan government and the United Nations Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the initiative was budgeted at around US$12 million.

The project started in 2015, was reformulated in 2018 and ended on September 30, 2022.

Communities in the three provinces benefited from artisanal fishing kits (boats, nets, hooks, buoys, canvas boots, life jackets and communication radios).

They also received basic sanitation, monitoring and garden fish processing kits, consisting of a motor pump, irrigation hose, manual watering can, machete, hoe, rake and sprayer.

Artisanal fishing was developed in the provinces of Bengo (Zenza do Golungo lagoon) and Cuanza Norte (Ngolome lagoon), while the aquaculture project was implemented in Malanje.

At the closing ceremony of the project, the deputy municipal administrator of Dande for the technical sector, infrastructure and community services, João Macosso, highlighted the region’s potential in terms of water resources, the vast coastline and the number of artisanal fishermen.

He referred that the project represents a change in the management of artisanal fishing characterized by low investment and income focused on the use of fish for subsistence purposes.

At the moment, the municipal administrations are replicating the project with the riverside communities.
