Africa-Press – Angola. The assembly of the four turbines of the Luachimo hydroelectric dam, in Lunda Norte province, with capacity to produce 34 megawatts of energy, has been completed.
During the verification visit of the local governor, Deolinda Vilarinho, the referred contract, two turbines already produce 17 megawatts of energy, supplying the product to the city of Dundo, while the other two with the same capacity are in the construction phase. rehearsal.
During the visit, Deolinda Vilarinho was informed that the entry into full operation of the largest energy project in eastern Angola is scheduled for next August or early September.
The contractors explained that the constant cuts in electricity that are registered in the city of Dundo, have to do with the tests that are being carried out on the machines.
On the occasion, the governor of Lunda Norte recommended strict compliance with the deadlines established for the completion of the contract, taking into account its importance in attracting private investment, especially in the industrial sector.
He assured that with the completion of the project, the province of Lunda Norte will have stability in the supply of electricity and will greatly reduce fuel costs.
In global terms, the project budgeted at 212 million, 310 thousand and 22 US dollars, will benefit around 10,600 families.
In addition to the city of Dundo, once the work is completed, the Luachimo Hydroelectric Power Plant will also supply electricity to the municipalities of Cambulo and Lucapa, including the towns of Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Calonda.
The project
The works include the rehabilitation of mechanical equipment, execution of a new hydraulic circuit sized for 240 cubic meters of water per second, consisting of a water intake, adduction channel, loading chamber and return channel.
A new 60 kilovolt substation was also built and the access road to the dam was remodeled, including the passage to the power station.
The plant’s new infrastructure is 35 meters high, the equivalent of an eleven-story building, in an area measuring 50 meters in length and 30 meters in cross-section.
The building of the old power plant was rehabilitated to serve technical education institutions in the future and may become the first Museum of the Energy sector in Angola.
The contract includes the recovery of the 85-kilometre high-voltage transmission line to the mining town of N’zagi, Cambulo municipality, with an additional value estimated at US$40 million.
The last stage of the project foresees the extension of the same distribution network to the headquarters of Lucapa, including the locality of Calonda.
The transport line will also pass through the towns of Fucauma and Cassanguidi, taking into account the existence of economic activities, especially in the mining sector.
