Africa-Press – Angola. The Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Network recorded a significant growth in the first five months of 2025, reaching a volume of transactions in the order of 12.9 million Kwanzas in a single day in April and around 283 million operations during the month of May.

The figures were released on Monday in Luanda by the Executive Director of EMIS, Eduardo Bettencourt, at the second panel of the annual cycle of conferences on ‘Payment Instruments and Means in Angola’, organized by the National Bank of Angola (BNA).

According to Bettencourt, the accumulated amount transacted in 2025 already exceeds 16 trillion kwanzas, representing growth of 49.7 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

For Eduardo Bettencourt, the system’s growth was driven by the expansion of the Multicaixa network, the growing adoption of mobile transactions and the advance of alternative means of payment, especially KWIK, the instant transfer platform developed by the BNA to promote financial inclusion.

He noted that more than 60 per cent of transactions were carried out through digital channels, such as Multicaixa Express (MCX), which had already processed around 700 million transactions by May.

QR Code payments also exceeded three million transactions in May alone, confirming the acceptance of new payment methods, according to the manager.

According to the speaker, the KWIK system was seen as a key element in strengthening interoperability between bank accounts, digital wallets (CME) and mobile money services, with a view to creating a more accessible and inclusive financial ecosystem.

‘KWIK will make it possible to link Electronic Money Accounts (CME) or Digital Wallets and Mobile Money with bank accounts, creating a universe of around 17 million accounts,’ he said.

The conference was attended by national and international experts linked to Central Banks, as well as representatives of public and private institutions, the Council of Financial System Supervisors, banking and non-banking financial institutions, business associations, academics, entrepreneurs and traders.

It aimed to give an overview of the evolution of the electronic payment instruments and means available in the Angolan Payment System (SPA).
