Africa-Press – Angola. The Angola Head of State and African Union Chairperson, João Lourenço, reiterated on Sunday (07), in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), that strengthening multilateralism is essential to address the major global challenges that particularly affect countries in the Global South.

In his opening address at the II Africa-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit, the Angolan leader highlighted that the world is experiencing a time marked by major changes, including the climate crisis, food and energy insecurity, geopolitical instability, forced migration, and extreme economic pressures.

“These challenges particularly affect countries in the Global South, especially those in Africa and the Caribbean, as they are the ones most deprived of the means and resources to address these phenomena,” he emphasized.

Security Council Reform

President Lourenço reiterated the need to reform the United Nations system, particularly the Security Council, so that this body “reflects the reality of today’s world” and fully fulfills its role as a guarantor of international peace and security.

“It is imperative that we make coordinated, convergent efforts to demonstrate the inevitability of reforming the United Nations system,” he stated, adding that the Council must emerge from its current stagnation and near ineffectiveness.

Role of Africa and the Caribbean

In president Lourenço’s view, it is up to African and Caribbean states to take a common stance in defending a multilateralism capable of responding to contemporary challenges in peace and security, climate, and sustainable development.

“It is necessary to ensure that, within the structures of international institutions, there is representation that encompasses the aspirations and desires of the peoples of all continents, particularly those excluded from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East,” he emphasized.

The II Africa-CARICOM Summit analyzes the strengthening of economic cooperation, the promotion of trade and investment, mobility between the two regions through the facilitation of visas and air links, cultural and educational exchanges, as well as political and diplomatic coordination on common international issues.
