Basic basket prices register significant increases

Africa-Press – Angola. The prices of the main basic basket products in the city of Caxito, northern Bengo province, have registered significant rises in recent weeks, due to the shortage of goods and currency.

In a round carried out, by several commercial establishments, it was found that some register a small number of products sold at high prices.

The products that had the biggest increase are rice, sugar, wheat flour, box of pasta and oil.

Thus, the 25-kilogram bag of rice previously sold at a price of 8,000 kwanzas, went to 14,800 kz, the 50-kg bag of sugar is being sold at 31,000 kz, against 19,500 kz in previous months.

The 50 kg bag of wheat is being sold at a price of 24,000 kz, against 16,000 previous ones, the box of pasta is being sold at 5,500 kz, against 3,500 kz, while the tomato paste went from 4,400 kz to 5,200 kwanzas.

As for fresh products, a 10 kg box of horse mackerel is being sold at 18,000 kz, against 13,000 kz in the past, a 10 kg box of cachucho has gone from 8,000 kz to 12,000 kz, and a 10 kg corvina box previously sold at 14,000 kz is being sold sold at the price of 18,000 kz.

Bread is the only product that maintains its price (50 and 100 kz), suffering only a reduction in size.

At Jumbinho, the only supermarket in the province, the products did not register any change.

The exchange rate and the scarcity of products are identified as the main reasons for the rise in prices of basic basket products.

Anacleta Manuel, a housewife, said that the situation is difficult and that the government must find solutions to reverse the situation.

For Miguel Makondambuta, a civil servant, prices are exaggerated, wages are low and unemployment is high. These factors may contribute to the rise of delinquency in the country, he said.
