Africa-Press – Angola. The trophy of the 19th edition of the Men’s Senior Basketball World Cup, to be held from August 25 to September 10, in Asia, will be on display in Luanda, starting on Sunday.

According to a press release from the Angolan Federation of the sport (FAB), this Thursday, the cup will remain on national soil for four days, in a promotion by the international federation.

The exhibition of the trophy in the country aims to promote the sport among fans, with Angola being one of the participants in the World Cup, to be held in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.

According to a communication from the FAB, this World Cup is called the “Naismith Trophyé”, a tribute to James Naismith, the inventor of the modality.

The current version, created in 1998, has Naismith’s name engraved in Latin, Arabic, Chinese characters and Egyptian hieroglyphs, symbolizing basketball’s international influence.

The note from the Angolan organ explains that the new version of the trophy is approximately 60 centimeters high, 13 centimeters more than the previous version.

It is made almost entirely of gold and features the names of previous edition champions engraved on the base.

The original name of FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur) is engraved on the trophy’s rim, highlighting its historical importance.

The bowl, designed by Radiant, was handcrafted by goldsmith Thomas Lyte.

The piece will pass through the capitals of the 32 countries that will participate in the event which, for the first time, will be hosted by three countries, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia.

Luanda is the fourth African capital to receive the “Trophy Tour ́2023”, after Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), Praia (Cape-Verde) and Cairo (Egypt).

After Angola, on the 25th, the cup will head to Brazil and return to the African continent, in South Sudan, on the 28th of this month.

The Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) prepared an exhibition of the iconic piece to the public at Belas Shopping, in Talatona, on May 22 (Monday), from 9am to 4pm.

The program also includes exhibitions at the HCTA hotel, Shopping Fortaleza, the Slavery Museum and the Iron Palace.
