Africa-Press – Angola. The governor of Lunda Sul, Daniel Neto, considered it fundamental, this Thursday, that the battle of Cuito Cuanavale be praised and referenced, so that future generations of Angolans know the feat that gave freedom to Southern Africa.

The battle took place, between 1987 and 1988, in Cuito Cuanavale, involving soldiers from the extinct Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FALA), supported by the South African Apartheid regime, and the Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA).

Speaking to the press on the occasion of March 23, the Liberation Day of Southern Africa, which is celebrated yesterday, the leader stressed that the date cannot go unnoticed, for whom one must honor those involved in the battle that South African invasion of Angolan territory.

The official recognized that there is still much to be done in favor of the motherland’s veterans, stressing that the Government has been working in that direction.

For his part, the former combatant of the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, José Yambo, 67 years old, regrets the fact that many Angolans do not know what the battle of March 23, 1987 was, for this reason, he said he was write since 2020 a book that portrays all events of the dispute.

He said that the events of March 23 should be included in the general education curriculum so that people can master the history of this celebrated achievement.

He reported that his work first began to narrate the “zebra offensive” of August 3, 1987, which is the essence of where the battle of Cuito Cuanavale began.

Yesterday, throughout the SADC region, the Liberation Day of Southern Africa is celebrated, a date dedicated to the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, which took place in this municipality in the Angolan province of Cuando Cubango and which was decisive for the indebtedness of Namibia and the end of the regime of apartheid in South Africa.
