Africa-Press – Angola. The National Basketball Team that is preparing to participate in the Pre-Olympic Tournament from the 2nd to the 7th of July, in Valencia (Spain), already has its biggest reference, Bruno Fernando, from the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.
The 2.06 m pole has only now been part of the work of the four-time African champions due to an NBA clause, despite its presence long before in Porto (Portugal), where preparations are taking place for the event, qualifying for the Olympic Games from 26 July to August 11th in Paris (France).
Bruno Fernando was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 34th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, becoming the first Angolan and only one, to date, to progress in the biggest Basketball League in the world.
At the service of the Hawks, the player, trained in 1.o de Agosto (Angola), completes the group of players called up who “militarize” outside the country, namely, the base winger, Selton Miguel (University of South Florida), the center Jilson Bango (from Lowen Braunschweig in Germany).
Completing this group of basketball players who play outside of Angola are center forward Sílvio de Sousa (Chorale Roanne, from the French First League), and Eduardo Francisco, who last week became champion with Sport Lisboa and Benfica.
Of those called up by coach Pep Clarós, three players were preferred last week, namely Wilson Ambrósio, Milton Valente and Teodoyane Simão.
After the preparation taking place in Portugal, dominated by the physical and tactical component, the team will head to Serbia on Friday, following the work, with preparation games expected with teams from the first division of that eastern European country.
For the Intercontinental Tournament, the national five are in group A, with Spain and Bahamas, while B includes Lebanon, Poland and Finland, with the first two classified in each group qualifying for the semi-finals.
Angola is looking for its sixth appearance at the Olympic Games. The premiere took place in 1992 (Barcelona), 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sidney) 2004 (Athens) and 2008 (Beijing)
