Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 1,310 tons of agricultural products, 80% of which being corn, are transported monthly from Caconda, province of Huíla, to other municipalities, an important step to avoid waste due to spoilage.

According to the Caconda administrator, Castilho Cacumba, this is a satisfactory amount that allows farmers to have capital to reinvest, as well as conditions to contribute to their tax obligations.

However, on Wednesday’s statements, the administrator said that the municipality, which is part of the “Corn Triangle”, still faces problems with distribution, due to the lack of means of transport and difficult access to production areas.

He stated that producers resort to freight, often expensive, to transport their produce, noting a considerable increase in distribution also resulting from improved access to some production areas, particularly Gungue.

The source stressed that the destination of the production has been Luanda, which absorbs the most, followed by Benguela, Huambo, Cunene, Namibe, Uíge, and Huíla, which, in addition to corn, receives a considerable production of beans, tomatoes, onions, and other horticultural crops.

He highlighted that the municipality currently has 11 logistics centers that store products for later transportation.

Castilho Cacumba emphasized that in the last two agricultural campaigns, Caconda registered a considerable increase in production, going from 32,200 tons of various products in 2023-2024 to 40,770 tons in 2024-2025, as a result of increased investment in the area.

The municipal administrator noted that the increase in production is also due to the rehabilitation of the irrigation canal in the Waba commune, as well as support for 19 field schools, 6 cooperatives and the same number of farmers’ associations, with agricultural resources, totaling 1,170 families.

For the current 2025/26 agricultural campaign, he stated that the forecast is 57,380 tons, with emphasis on maize, in a prepared area of 51,300 hectares (51,300 tons) and the remainder for beans.

For 2026, the source said that the administration will work on improving the quality of services provided within the framework of inspection and expansion of economic activities at the municipal level, intensifying inspection services in order to guarantee good food safety for the residents.

Within the framework of integrated economic development, he emphasized that more than 90% of the municipality’s commercial network is registered and more than 60% of these businesses pay their taxes and fees regularly.

The municipality of Caconda has an estimated population of 226,236 inhabitants.
