Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, was unanimously elected on Monday in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, as chair of the Legal Subcommittee of the Parliamentary Forum of the Southern African Development Community (PF-SADC) for the 2024-2026 biennium. According to a note, the election of the leader of the Angolan Parliament took place during the opening of the meeting of the aforementioned body, and, on that occasion, Carolina Cerqueira was also sworn in as a member of the Executive Committee for the Legal Affairs Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee of the Trust Fund.

The vice-chair of the Legal Subcommittee was assigned to the Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, Francis Mudenda.Speaking at the event, the President of the National Assembly stated that she wants the transformation of the Parliamentary Forum to be accompanied by administrative reform, promoting an agenda based on sovereignty, sustainable development, African solidarity and institutional strengthening, with special attention to the representation of young people and women in the future Regional Parliament.

The parliamentarian reaffirmed Angola’s political commitment to a democratic SADC, a legitimate and functional Regional Parliament, an effective and equitable free trade zone, and regional integration based on economic justice, innovation and strategic independence.

Carolina Cerqueira also reported that the protocol for transforming the SADC Forum into a Regional Parliament has already been submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterating Angola’s commitment to the pillars of democracy, good governance and institutional responsibility.

Visit to the Heroes’ Memorial

Yesterday, the members of the Executive Committee visited the Heroes’ Memorial, where the first President and Founder of the Namibian Nation, Sam Nujoma, who passed away in February this year, and the third President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, who passed away on 4 February 2024, are buried. The visit, led by the Speaker of the Namibian Parliament, Saara Amadhila, was also attended by the Speakers of the Parliaments of Madagascar, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
