Africa-Press – Angola. At least US$7.17 million and US$479 will be invested over the next 12 months to reinforce the water supply to the municipal seat of Chibia, in Huíla, through the construction of a new intake at the Gangelas dam.

The central government’s investment, through the Ministry of Energy and Water, will make it possible to make over 2,211 home connections, in a municipality whose population density in the main town is estimated at 90,000 inhabitants.

There are currently 615 home connections, of which 245 are functional and the rest are inoperative due to lack of pressure on the distribution network.

The project, by the Ministry of Energy and Water, whose contract was signed in July 2014, only this Friday saw the laying of the foundation stone by the supervising minister, João Baptista Borges, with Elecnor as contractor.

The initiative is now in the engineering phase which will last three months and the remaining nine are for execution. In addition to a new collection at the dam, the system will have a raw water pipeline in a linear extension of seven kilometers, with a diameter of 355 millimeters.

The project will also allow for the construction of a compact treatment plant of 160 cubic metres, three treated water pumps, with a capacity of 140 cubic metres/hour, a secondary and tertiary distribution network, covering a length of 30 kilometers and 16 fountains.

Speaking after the contractor presented the project, the administrator of Chibia, Sérgio da Cunha Velho, said that it will increase the water treatment capacity from 40 cubic meters of water per hour to 160.

“The presence of the minister demonstrates the Executive’s concern in solving the problem that afflicts the population, our hopes will be renewed daily until the completion of this project that will modernize the water treatment plant in Chibia”, he said.

In turn, the Minister of Energy and Water João Baptista Borges, said that with more water, the municipality will have the possibility of more regular consumption and a 24-hour supply.

It should be noted that in the near future they will establish a more stable electricity connection between Lubango and Chibia with greater capacity for us to also integrate the large energy consumers that we have here, the five ornamental stone units that need energy.
