Africa-Press – Angola. The need to elevate the town of Cuito Cuanavale, in Cuando Cubango province, to a World Heritage Site was defended this Wednesday by academics.
In that locality, between 1987 and 1988, the battle of Cuito Cuanavale took place, involving soldiers from the extinct Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FALA), supported by the South African Apartheid regime, and the Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA ), winners of this contest.
Speaking to press, historian Luís Paulo Vissunjo defended that Angola submit to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) the process for recognition and passage of this locality to humanity heritage.
For him, the circumscription is a reference in the culture of peace, defended by UNESCO.
In this regard, he said that the Angolan authorities should work towards the materialization of this purpose, since the town of Cuito Cuanavale was the scene of one of the biggest battles in contemporary history.
He recalled that the 23rd of March is currently being celebrated as Southern Africa Day, a generalized recognition of the countries that make up SADC.
Corroborating the idea, anthropologist Diakinini Boholo believes that the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will support the candidacy, enough weight to make this claim a reality.
For him, the southern region needs to work hard to convince UNIESCO, which involves cataloging the various factors that this United Nations body requires, for inclusion in the World Heritage list.
The executive secretary of the Menongue Municipal Youth Council, Adriano Lucas Jaime, asked for more information about Cuito Cuanavale, including the battle.
It argues that the battle of Cuito Cuanavale should be part of the school curriculum in SADC countries.
“We must publicize, more and more, the 23rd of March with lectures, colloquiums, seminars and other means that facilitate the dissemination of this great feat”, he stressed.
In honor of the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, Angola proposed March 23 to the SADC Council of Ministers as the date for Southern Africa.
It was adopted on March 23, 2018, unanimously, by the member states of the community.
