Angola and the Islamic Republic of Iran have expressed their intention to strengthen friendly and cooperative relations, with an emphasis on deepening their economic partnership, creating a Committee for Political Consultations and opening Diplomatic Missions in Luanda and Tehran. The intention was expressed yesterday during the delivery of a message by the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, to his Iranian counterpart. The letter was delivered by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities, Domingos Vieira Lopes, who has been in Tehran since last weekend for a working visit lasting several days. The visit aims to boost bilateral contacts and identify new areas of common interest, with a focus on the economic sector and political relations.

Iran, the second largest nation in the Middle East, occupies a significant geostrategic position, bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Turkey, as well as having access to the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. With an area of ​​1,648,195 km2 and a population of over 77 million, the country stands out for its geographical diversity and its historical importance on the international stage.Tehran, the country’s capital and largest city, is the country’s main cultural, financial and industrial centre. Iran has a major influence on global energy security, holding the world’s largest natural gas reserves and the fourth largest proven oil reserves.

The country is a founding member of international organisations such as the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and OPEC.

The strengthening of ties between Angola and Iran comes in a context of mutual search for new strategic partners and opportunities for diversified cooperation.
