The president of the Angolan Social Communication Regulatory Entity (ERCA), Adelino Marques de Almeida, defended, on Friday, in the city of Sumbe, Cuanza-Sul province, greater autonomy in terms of publishing content from social communication bodies at national level. local, in order to guarantee up-to-date information for end consumers.
Adelino Marques de Almeida spoke to the press at the end of the 24-hour visit to Cuanza-Sul, which served to verify the operating status of the different Social Communication bodies, where he received explanations of the real situation of the bodies visited.
During his stay in Sumbe, the president of ERCA contacted the management of Edições Novembro-EP, Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA), Rádio Cuanza-Sul, Agência Angola Press (Angop) and Rádio Ecclesia, and at the end he mentioned that the observation visit takes place within the body’s annual framework of activities, which aims to interact with media professionals at country level.
Adelino de Almeida considered that visits to the offices of Social Communication bodies result from the absence of ERCA representations in the provinces, entities that should monitor news content disseminated at local level.
“Unfortunately, so far ERCA does not have provincial representations or focal points that monitor the content disseminated and published by the media in Kwanza-Sul”, he said.
During his visits to the provincial headquarters, Adelino de Almeida reminded Social Communication professionals of the need for greater coverage of content in the province’s twelve municipalities, in addition to the care to be taken into account when applying the contradictory principle or right of reply.
“The challenges in the province of Cuanza-Sul at the level of media bodies, public and private, are several, mainly in relation to the dissemination of local matters, in the twelve municipalities, which calls into question the current political, social and economic facts ”, he said.
Extension of radio and television broadcasting signals
In the meeting he held with the deputy governor for the Political, Social and Economic sector, Emília Tchinawalile, the president of ERCA expressed concern about the province’s situation presented by the governor, especially the lack of radio and television signals, as well as the distribution of press in the twelve municipalities of Cuanza-Sul. “ERCA will advocate with the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, so that within the possibilities of each body, a response can be given, gradually, to the problems identified”, he stressed.
In Adelino de Almeida’s view, any people would like to see their local reality better portrayed by the news services of the country’s main media outlets.
However, the president of ERCA encouraged those responsible for the bodies represented in Cuanza-Sul to continue working to overcome the problem of the lack of content in the province’s articles in the national information grid, which requires greater collaboration between the media. society and local authorities, keeping the population informed about all relevant facts that happen at local level.
The Angolan Social Communication Regulatory Entity is a legal person governed by public law, endowed with administrative, financial and patrimonial autonomy, which has the function of regulating and supervising media in the country in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and applicable law. ERCA is independent in the exercise of its functions, with the right to freely define the direction of its activities in strict compliance with the Constitution and the Law.
