Executive plans to rationalize the start of PLANAGRÃO

Africa-Press – Angola. The Executive plans to rationalize the start of the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production (PLANAGRÃO), starting with a pilot phase and scaled production, announced, this Tuesday, in Luanda, the Secretary of State for Economy, Ivan dos Saints.

Speaking at the usual briefing from the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), he highlighted that there are combined factors including land, nearby rivers and ease of access to national roads.

Ivan dos Santos explained that the rationale for identifying these areas is to guarantee, in a first phase, the ease of implementing the cultivation of Planagrão cereals, making it necessary to start providing some dynamics and speed.

The Secretary of State recalled that visits were carried out from 11 October to 1 November to the provinces of Moxico and Cuando Cubango, as part of the observation and strategy actions carried out by the Planagrão technical unit.

He explained that, in the two provinces, 245 thousand hectares were identified for the National Plan to Promote Grain Production, of the 2 million hectares foreseen for the four eastern provinces (Moxico, Cuando Cubango, Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte), 500 thousand for each.

With the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production (PLANAGRÃO), valued at 2.8 billion kwanzas, the aim is to increase the production of rice, corn, wheat, soybeans and other cereals to more than six million tons by the year 2027, compared to the three million and 26,140 produced in 2021.

The Plan focuses on the provinces of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico and Cuando Cubango, although the remaining provinces are also included in the account.

PLANAGRÃO will be financed by the State, through the Development Bank of Angola (BDA) and the Angolan Venture Capital Active Fund (FACRA) and developed by the private sector.

PLANAGRÃO foresees an average annual investment of around 670 million dollars for cereal production and around 471 million dollars for the construction of infrastructure to support the productive and social sector.

The final objective of PLANAGRÃO is to contribute to the country’s food and nutritional sovereignty, and a set of measures must be created that also includes the creation of infrastructure.

The Executive plans to invest, over a period of five years, the value of 1.17 billion kwanzas in infrastructure, which includes the demarcation of two million hectares, subdivision and access roads to production areas.
