Africa-Press – Angola. The chairman of the African Regional Office of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA Africa), Aníbal Manave, on Tuesday in Luanda expressed his satisfaction at the creation of conditions for the practice of the sport, especially in communities.

Speaking during the Afrobasket 2025 opening ceremony at the Kilamba pavilion, he emphasized that Angola is gradually returning to being a reference given the current investments in relation to athlete training.

He described it as an honor and a privilege for the African basketball family to include the competition in the celebrations of Angola’s 50th anniversary of Independence, thus congratulating the country on the occasion.

The official recalled that Angola was chosen to host the tournament with the conviction that the event would be “worthy of the greatness of the country, the titles won and the strong spirituality of the Angolan people”.

“As from this edition, the competition has reached a higher level in terms of organization”, he emphasized.

As an example of good organization, Aníbal Manave mentioned the renovation of the sports facilities, not only at Kilamba Arena in the capital city, the competition’s main venue, but also at the Welwitschia Mirabilis pavilion in Namibe province, which hosts two of the four qualifying rounds.

The official also thanked the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão and the chairman of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), Moniz Silva, for sharing a common strategic vision for the development of the sport.

He also praised the participating teams for their investment in athlete preparation and the growth of the tournament, arguing that Afrobasket 2025 must be a world-class competition.

The top leader of FIBA Africa, who has Mozambican nationality, asked the people to support the event by transforming it into a celebration of African talent.

However, he noted that Afrobasket is an “expression of African culture and unity” and that with solidarity and dedication, it will be possible to place basketball on the continent in the prominent place it deserves.
