Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) explains, in a statement accessed on Tuesday (09) in Luanda, that the suspension of the National Championship of the First Division (Girabola 2025-26) was motivated by various factors that affect the normal course of the competition.
In a statement, the governing body points to the adjustment of the calendar related to the holding of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, to be held from the 21st of the current month until Jan the 18th, in which Angola will participate, as one of the main reasons.
“The Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) was scheduled for the middle of the year, a period when national championships are suspended. However, FIFA decided to hold the expanded version of the FIFA Club World Cup in June and July, which led CAF to postpone the CAN, making it impossible for it to take place during the off-season for national championships,” it reads.
The document indicates that the Girabola will begin on a date to be scheduled by the Competitions Directorate, and its duration and regularity will always be subject to the international calendars of FIFA, CAF, and COSAFA competitions.
In this context, according to the statement, the temporary suspension of the national competition from the completed 10th round aims to safeguard sporting integrity, ensuring organizational quality and strict compliance with current regulations.
The federation emphasizes that once all conditions are restored, the new calendar and other guidelines regarding the resumption of the championship will be released.
