Government bets on training staff in the space area

Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Government plans to train, in the coming days, more staff from academic institutions to transfer knowledge in the space area, within the framework of the sector’s challenges in the country.

With this initiative, national staff will be able to have their first experience in the Design, Construction and Launch of Small Satellites (CANSAT) project, according to the coordinator of the National Space Education Programme, Gilberto Gomes.

CANSAT Angolano is a picosatellite built by the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) for educational purposes, which enables students to gain their first experience in an aerospace project.

Gilberto Gomes was speaking at the opening of the 3rd Course on Design, Construction and Launching of Small Satellites (Cansat), promoted by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Social Communication (MINTTICS), through GGPEN.

In this edition, which runs from the 8th of May to the 14th of June, at the Higher Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of the University of Luanda, 30 trainees from 15 public and private universities in the country, selected in the provinces of Lunda-Norte, Huambo and Uíge.

The training aims to provide trainees with knowledge about the functions, architecture and integration of subsystems that make up a satellite, thus giving the possibility of involving the National Academy in projects related to Science and Aerospace Technology.

The group will learn how to design a mission, build subsystems, test, launch, capture data, treat data and produce information, a job similar to the operations carried out by the operators of the Control and Emission Center of the Angosat -2.

According to the official, the transfer of knowledge aims at strengthening the binomial academy and industry, justifying the need for more national staff to attend to projects in the space area.

With this initiative, national universities, in the near future, will be able to launch their first satellite, called “Académico Cubesate”.

For this, throughout the training, trainees will improve design, construction, testing, launch, operation and data processing techniques obtained from a functional representation of a real satellite integrated into a 330 millimeter soda can volume, the CANSAT .

This group of graduates will also be awarded two master classes by internationally renowned professors in academia and the small satellite industry, namely Robert Van Zil (AAC Space Africa) and Tayo Tejumola (International Space University).

The master class will be given on the sidelines of the Angotic Forum 2023, scheduled for next June.

Bruna Martin, one of the trainees, highlights the importance of the training, which will allow, in her opinion, to learn how a conventional satellite works from a miniature one.

At the end of the training and construction of the small satellite, CANSAT, as in 2019, the launch of the device will have the support of a helicopter from the National Air Force (FAN) and will take place at the Special Forces Training School (EFFE) of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), located in the commune of Cabo Ledo, province of Luanda.

The small satellite, a representation of a conventional satellite, will be shaped like a 330 millimeter soda can.
