Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Human Rights, Ana Celeste, defended, this Wednesday, a greater commitment by journalists in publicizing and raising awareness of society with regard to matters relating to trafficking in human beings.

The official made these considerations at the end of the workshop aimed at journalists from public and private media, having also called for the transmission and implementation of the knowledge acquired during training for prevention, as well as raising awareness of society in terms of human trafficking humans.

“We need the cases that no one has seen to be denounced by the communities”, he emphasized.

During his speech, he informed that Angola remains at level two (2) of the report published by the US Department on Trafficking in Human Beings, for 2022, which, in his opinion, means that the country has done a positive job.

However, he underlined that “we still need to work harder to combat these crimes”.

He clarified that, since 2014, the country has had a commission for preparing reports on crimes of trafficking in human beings, which acts in the framework of prevention, training, witness protection, prosecution of perpetrators, in partnership with other institutions.

According to Ana Celeste Januário, “it is very common to find people who have no knowledge about trafficking in human beings, the difference that exists between organ trafficking, smuggling, crimes motivated by cultural practices or witchcraft, kidnapping, illegal migration and other crimes, therefore, he considered it important to carry out training actions aimed at other civil society actors, to enlighten people more and more”.

Journalists from public and private media from the provinces of Luanda, Cabinda, Zaire, Uíge, Lundas Norte and Sul, Cunene, Moxico and Huíla participated in the training.

The training action, which started on Monday (3), aimed at improving the knowledge of journalists so that they participate in raising awareness among the population, with a view to identifying and holding accountable criminals who rely on trafficking in human beings as a means of survival.

In it, journalists debated topics related to the definition of the crime of trafficking in human beings, victims of trafficking, forms and manifestations of trafficking in human beings and an overview of Angola’s efforts in preventing and combating trafficking in human beings.

Human trafficking and the media, how to build a history of human trafficking, the protection of refugees and unaccompanied children on the move in Angola are among the topics discussed.

The event was also attended by representatives of the United Nations (UN) residing in Angola, UNODC, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), civil society, as well as national and international speakers.
