Africa-Press – Angola. The new Luanda International Airport will be inaugurated by the end of this year (2023), reaffirmed Saturday, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, after a visit to verify the undertaking’s works, the second this year.
“I confirm that there have been advances and, in principle, we maintain the date for the inauguration”, said the Angolan Head of State in statements to the press at the end of the visit, where he received information on the progress of the works that are in the final stretch.
The new Luanda International Airport “named” by Dr. António Agostinho Neto, first President of Angola, located in the Bom Jesus area, municipality of Icolo e Bengo, in Luanda, occupies an area of 1,324 hectares and will have capacity for 15 million passengers and a volume of goods of 50 thousand tons per year .
João Lourenço said that he received information from the construction contractor that “the work is in progress and, in due time, we will have good news”.
The work budgeted at USD 1.4 billion is in charge of the Chinese state company Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC).
João Lourenço stated that, on his visit, the last one before the inauguration “we managed to unblock a constraint, which he did not specify.
“The value of field visits is precisely this. Sometimes it gives us the opportunity to make decisions on the ground that are always more effective than waiting for a meeting”, he expressed.
In March of the current year, during his last visit to the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto, the Head of State had stated that the important infrastructure would be inaugurated in December 2023.
The development has two double runways and is sized to receive, among others, B747 and A380 aircraft, currently the largest commercial aircraft.
The southern runway, the largest at the airport, measures 4,000 meters by 60 meters in width, and received, in June 2022, the first experimental flight of a Boeing 777 aircraft from the national flag company TAAG.
The airport project contemplates the construction of an airport city that will cover an area of 75 square kilometers.
