Africa-Press – Angola. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is available to continue supporting ongoing policies in the country, especially in terms of technical assistance and training, said, this Wednesday, in Luanda, the institution’s deputy director general, Antoinette Sayeh.
The official, who was speaking to the press at the end of an audience granted by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, at the Presidential Palace, stressed that the offer remains in place if Angola needs it, stressing that if the reforms underway in the country are well undertaken, the future will be bright.
On his first visit to Angola, he reported that the meeting with the Head of State aimed, essentially, at strengthening and deepening cooperation, as well as congratulating the Angolan authorities on the reforms undertaken to face the various economic facts facing the country.
Regarding the possibility of the IMF reinforcing financing for Angola, he said that the issue was not discussed, remembering that the institution had a successful financing program for Angola, which ended in 2021.
“I shared with the President of the Republic the need for efforts to be continued, taking into account that the world is characterized by recurring shocks, mainly in the oil market, and Angola, being an oil producing country, must continue to face this process”, he highlighted.
Taking into account the volatility of the oil price and the need for Angola to make more and more efforts to adapt to these shocks, he encouraged the Government to continue reforms, especially those that were initiated last year, which have to do with the process of removing fuel subsidies.
During the meeting, the need to strengthen the social services network was also agreed, in order to support the increasingly vulnerable layers, so that they can feel the presence of the Government, which should continue to have good communication programs about the need for implementation of these reforms, as well as strengthening other areas necessary so that such reforms can be reflected in the lives of the population.
Likewise, the President’s vision regarding diversification and the need to continue this process were discussed, as well as efforts to combat corruption to create a favorable business environment in Angola.
He expressed his satisfaction with the guarantee of priority that João Lourenço undertakes in matters of quality education and the necessary skills and abilities, so that education advances and reforms have positive results.
