Africa-Press – Angola. The Japanese government has provided one million dollars this year to combat tax crimes in Angola and prevent illicit financial flows, the Japanese ambassador announced in Luanda on Monday. Suzuki Toru was speaking to the press at the launch ceremony of the project “Promoting a Responsible and Sustainable Business Environment and Encouraging Good Governance and Trade Facilitation by Combating and Preventing Illicit Financial Flows and Tax Crimes in Angola”.
The event was promoted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC – Angola) in partnership with the governments of Angola and Japan.
According to the diplomat, this amount is intended to strengthen the institutional capacity of the General Tax Administration and other inspection agencies in Angola. For the Japanese ambassador, this initiative aims to create ideal conditions for sustainable trade and investment, attracting Japanese and international companies in line with the TICAD 9 motto, “Co-creating Innovative Solutions with Africa”.
“I am confident that this project will make a significant contribution to shared prosperity and development for both Angola and Japan,” he said. The diplomat added that the funds provided come from the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), which aims to empower African partners in combating exploitation, trafficking of mineral resources and money laundering. The Secretary of State for Finance and Treasury, Otoniel dos Santos, highlighted the three central objectives of the project, such as strengthening the integrity of the fiscal and financial system and strengthening the national response to financial crime and tax fraud. The minister also believes that the project aims to promote a more responsible, attractive and investment-friendly business environment, and that it is a national commitment and an opportunity for Japan to obtain funding to consolidate partnerships with the United Nations and all institutions involved in the Coordinated Border Management Committee.
