João Lourenço analyzes Angola-US Eximbank cooperation

Africa-Press – Angola. The cooperation between Angola and the United States of America (USA), in particular the projects financed by the Eximbank, was under analysis this Monday, during an audience that the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, granted to the president of this institution , Reta Jo Lewis.

At the end of the meeting, the president of the US Export and Import Bank (Eximbank) said that the audience also served to talk about strengthening and deepening economic relations between the two countries, within the framework of reciprocal advantages.

“We have been involved in Angola since 1942”, recalled the president of Eximbank, an institution that last June granted Angola financing worth US$900 million to support the construction of two solar photovoltaic power stations in the country.

This financing was considered the largest transaction made by the bank, so far, in the field of renewable energy, within the framework of the Joe Biden administration’s support for infrastructure and global investments.

In office since February 2022, Reta Jo Lewis considered this aspect a demonstration of the strength of cooperation and existing ties between the two countries.

At the beginning of this year (2023), the Angolan Ministry of Finance and the US Eximbank signed a US$2 billion financing agreement for the production of renewable energy in Angola.

In 2014, Eximbank signed a memorandum of understanding with the Angolan Government to finance trade and infrastructure, using the said bank’s financing tools.

The memorandum identifies several economic sectors, including energy, infrastructure, railways, roads, mining, telecommunications, agriculture, construction and environmental equipment, as well as water and sanitation projects.

Since the signing of the memorandum, the Eximbank has provided financial support to Angola for the acquisition of Boeing aircraft, by TAAG, the national flag carrier, and two fire trucks, manufactured by the US company, Oshkosh, for the Empresa Nacional de Air Navigation (ENNA).

Through Eximbank, the US Government works globally with public and private sector buyers to facilitate the procurement of US equipment and technology.

Eximbank is the official credit agency of the Federal Government of the United States of America.

It was established by Congress on February 2, 1934 to finance and secure purchases of goods for customers unable or unwilling to accept credit risks at a time when private investment was withdrawn.
