Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço met on Thursday with his counterpart from the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, on the sidelines of the Second Global Gateway 2025 Forum, taking place in Brussels under the auspices of the European Union.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed issues related to strengthening bilateral cooperation between Angola and South Africa, with a focus on the economy, energy, defense, and regional integration sectors, reaffirming their mutual commitment to strengthening the historical and strategic relations between the two countries.

Cooperation relations between Angola and South Africa have solid historical and strategic foundations, stemming from mutual support during the struggle for independence and against apartheid.

The two countries signed the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation in 1998 in Luanda.

Several other legal cooperation instruments were also signed between the two countries, notably the creation of the Bilateral Cooperation Commission in 2000. This constitutes a crucial diplomatic mechanism that, in recent years, has been the primary means of interaction, with four sessions held alternately in Luanda and Pretoria, enabling the implementation of cooperation initiatives.

Also today, the Angolan Head of State, who is participating in the Brussels event as the Acting Chair of the African Union, granted an audience with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNOPS (United Nations Bureau for Project Support Services), Jorge Moreira da Silva.

During the meeting, cooperation projects between Angola, the African Union, and the United Nations were discussed, focusing on infrastructure modernization, efficient public governance, environmental sustainability, and institutional strengthening.

President João Lourenço also met with Sudanese businessman and philanthropist Mo Ibrahim, founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, an institution recognized for its role in promoting good governance, ethical leadership, and transparency in Africa.

The Global Gateway Forum is a European Union initiative that aims to foster strategic partnerships with Africa, strengthen political dialogue, advance sustainable development projects, and encourage investment in infrastructure and innovation.
