Africa-Press – Angola. The essence of civil norms regarding family relationships and parental responsibilities toward their children are among the main topics covered in the academic work entitled “Roman Family Law” (De Família Apud Romanos – in Latin), launched Wednesday in Luanda.
The book authored by university professor António Visandule, is 168 pages long and subdivided into 16 parts. It is endorsed by the Academic Association of the Lisbon Faculty of Law (AAFDL).
The author said the manual addresses, among other topics, marriage, parental responsibilities, and the ability to marry within the scope of family law.
According to António Visandule, the book will provide an understanding of how the family developed, highlighting the role of the father in ancient Rome, who was the guardian of his family members and even slaves. On the other hand, he lamented the fact that Roman law, in his view, is not being taken seriously in class, with the exception of “one other faculty that is teaching Roman law to its students.”
“It is a duty for everyone with a legal background to have at least some basic knowledge of Roman law, even if they didn’t study Roman law in college as their formal training, but they should have it in their practical life,” he said.
António Visandule, retired Chief Justice, is from Tchimoma-Jongo, in the Galangue area of the Cuvango municipality, Huíla province, and holds a Master’s degree in Civil Legal Sciences from the Classical University of Lisbon.
The author was the spokesperson of the Tômbwa Municipal People’s Assembly and, for 22 years, served as the presiding judge of the Namibe Provincial Court, retiring in May 2014 at his own request.
He is the author of four books: “Roman Civil Procedural Law,” “Rome, Mother of the Wisdom of Law,” “Lus Romanum Ab Urbe Condita – Introductory Notions,” and the most recent, “Roman Family Law” (De Família Apud Romanos – in Latin).
