A message from the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in his capacity as President-in-Office of the International Conference on the Greater Region (CIRGL), was delivered this Friday to his Senegalese counterpart Macky Sall, in Dakar, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the letter, President João Lourenço presents the steps taken by Angola to fulfill the mandate of the Malabo Summit and expresses concern regarding the latest developments in the Great Lakes Region, with particular emphasis on the tension between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo .
To President Mack Sall, current President of the African Union, João Lourenço also reiterates the need to make efforts to resolve the conflict that has called into question every political and diplomatic initiative carried out to date.
It should also be noted that João Lourenço spoke on the phone with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Tuesday, expressing concern about the tension registered on the common border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, which justify the realization urgent need for a tripartite summit in Luanda.
Tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo worsened after the resumption in March of fighting between the Congolese army and the rebel movement (M23), which according to Kinshasa is supported by its Rwandan neighbours.
