Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan writer João Melo published, this Wednesday, in the United Kingdom, a collection of short stories entitled “And Suddenly the Flowers Withered and Other Stories”.
The book, with the seal of Europe Books, from the Europe Edizione group, was organized and translated by the American translator Clifford E. Landers. The latter works with great names in literature in Portuguese, especially Brazilians, such as Jorge Amado, Rubem Fonseca, João Ubaldo Ribeiro, Lima Barreto, Patrícia Melo and others.
He also translated “Baía dos Tigres”, by the Portuguese Pedro Rosa Mendes.
“And Suddenly the Flowers Withered and Other Stories” is the second book by João Melo published in English. The work has already been published in Italian and Spanish.
Later this year, it should also be published in Arabic and Chinese.
In addition to these book translations, some of his scattered short stories and poems have been published in French and German, in anthologies, magazines and international literary websites.
João Melo was born in Luanda in 1955 and studied law in Coimbra and Luanda. He graduated in Social Communication and did a master’s degree in Communication and Culture in Rio de Janeiro. He directed several Angolan, state and private media outlets.
He is a founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers (UEA), where he held various positions in the respective governing bodies, such as general secretary, chairman of the Executive Committee and chairman of the Supervisory Board.
His vast work includes “Limites & Redundancies”, “O Caçador de Nuvens”, “Song of Our Time”, “Journalism and Politics”, “Angolan Poems”, Tanto Amor”, “Fabulema”, “Definição”, among others.
