Africa-Press – Angola. Writer João Tala assured that women are the recurring theme of his works, which he elevates through prose and poetry to multiple dimensions, and this is no exception in his new book, entitled “Ventre Negro”, which hits the newsstands, in a sales and autograph session to be hosted by the Angolan Writers’ Union, in Luanda. Speaking yesterday to Jornal de Angola, he revealed that in his writing women appear with all the surroundings and as a psychological factor in themselves.

“She is a transversal character in my literary art, both in poetry, short stories, and now also in the novels that I have written, which I am just waiting for the opportunity to publish”, he observed.

Regarding the theme, the writer stressed that the stories in “Ventre Negro” bring together themes such as dance and music. However, he said that he leaves it up to the reader to discover from the work how the characters emerge in the cultural context in which the stories are set.

The writer stressed that the work “Ventre Negro” was written a few years ago, but the immense difficulties he faced in editing prevented its publication earlier.“Embuke, a publishing house founded by a young writer who is committed to his craft, gave me the opportunity to publish and so we continue together”, said João Tala, adding that the publication in this month was a mere coincidence, ruling out the possibility that it was a date chosen as part of the celebrations for Africa Day, on 25 May.

Known for his quality in poetry, João Tala acknowledged that even when he writes novels, poetry continues to be the most important word.

João Tala was born in Malanje, on 19 December 1959. He is a doctor by profession. He began his literary activity in the city of Huambo, having co-founded the Brigada Jovem de Literatura. In his first book of poetry, which was only published in 1997, João Tala revealed an auspicious contribution to the renewal and diversity of Angolan poetic discourse, which characterised the generation of Novíssima Poesia Angolana.

He is a member of the Angolan Writers’ Union and has published, among other titles, The Shape of Desires (1997), (First Book Award from the Writers’ Union in 1997 and first place in the Caxinde Floral Games in 1999); The Spending of the Seed (2000); The Shape of Desires II (2003), “Beyond the Night”, “Woman is the Homeland of Man”, “Female Oven”, “Rua da Insónia” and “Surreambulando”.
