Africa-Press – Angola. The president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, stated on Thursday in Caxito, capital of the province of Bengo, that the Social Communication sector in the country is making progress towards strengthening democracy.
The leader of the largest opposition party, who was speaking at the headquarters of the Provincial Committee after a working visit of several hours to the city of Caxito, stressed that the right to information must be guaranteed to all citizens, without any distinction.
“We recognise progress in the media sector in Angola, but there is still much to be done. The aim is to draw attention to two fundamental rights, including freedom of the press, which is essential for the construction of a democratic and participatory society”, declared the party leader.
Adalberto Costa Júnior also defended patriotic journalism, which places the interests of the country and the people above any private agendas, stressing that media professionals must be patriots, committed to the people and to building a better Angola. The commitment to promoting reforms that make the Media more inclusive, the party leader reiterated, must be responsible and focused on defending citizenship.
In the political arena, the president of UNITA said, he hopes that the 2027 General Elections will be held with transparency, where all Angolans can freely exercise their right to citizenship and choice.
Regarding the vigil held on Sunday in Caxito, Adalberto Costa Júnior clarified that the party’s members were holding a peaceful demonstration, without resorting to violence.
“Everyone has the right to demonstrate. No crime was being committed. The vigil aimed to draw attention to two fundamental rights: freedom of the press and the holding of transparent elections. These rights must go hand in hand with pluralism, the right to information and freedom of expression, elements that are not yet fully respected”, he concluded.
