Africa-Press – Angola. The continuity of coach José Neto, in charge of Petro de Luanda’s senior men’s basketball team, is yet to be defined, said the club’s president, Tomás Faria.

Speaking this Monday, at a press conference on the balance of the 2022-23 season, at the club’s headquarters, he confirmed the end of the Brazilian coach’s contract, however, he declined to advance the possibility of extending or not the contractual bond.

“Coach José is at the end of his contract and we still haven’t sat down to define our ideas”, he stressed.

José Neto, 52 years old, joined the “road axis” club in 2021. He won three National Championships, two Angola Cups and an equal number of the Vladimiro Romero Super Cup.

Failure in the African Basketball League (BAL)

The absence of the Angolan team in the final of the third edition of BAL is related to the merit of the finalists who did a better job than Petro, according to Tomás Faria.

“We must give credit to our opponents who, perhaps, invested more than us. This season, Petro appeared as the only finalist due to the absence of the previous winners and that also weighed in the two defeats”, he justified.

He referred that, despite the fourth place, the team evolved at a high level and was defeated by minimal differences, with which its management and technical team learned a lot.

For him, his mandate (ends in 2024) will not end without winning BAL, a test in which he was ranked third (2021) and second (2022).

The African competition, in this third edition organized as a League, was won by Al Ahly from Egypt, with a victory in the final over As Douanes from Senegal, by 80-65.
