Africa-Press – Angola. The theater group Julu celebrated its 31st anniversary in Luanda Friday, with the collection of donations to help the population of the village of Niassa, in the municipality of Cuito, province of Bié, which is still experiencing the consequences of war.
The event was also marked by a musical show promoted by artists from the national scene, as well as the exhibition of theatrical plays.
On the occasion, Luanda’s deputy governor for the social area, Manuel Gonçalves, highlighted the group’s commitment to moralizing society, as well as the importance of the arts in raising awareness among the population.
“This has been very intervening in the approaches of various social themes and, therefore, it is important that they continue in this path”, he said.
For the executive secretary of the Manuel Teixeira Group (Avô Ngola’s character), he said that the anniversary is a reflection of “a lot of strength, resilience and many blessings”.
He asked theater makers to be persistent and invest in training and the government left an appeal to commit to building theater rooms.
Peroteu de Jesus, another member of the group’s management, spoke of the moments that most marked the trajectory of the collective, recalling the gala with the then mediator of the armed conflict, Alione Blonde Beye, the victory of the National Prize for Culture and Arts and the of theater in the City of Luanda.
As a project for the future, he referred that the group will embrace a partnership with the National Institute of Professional Training (INEFOP), which aims to carry out solidarity shows, to help vulnerable people.
Founded on June 9, 1992, the Julu group performs in several provinces and has participated in many radio dramas, television spots and has taken theater to communities, as well as having in its cast a range of professionals who work for the development of the performing arts in the country, the main intervention and community theater.
Winner of the Luanda Theater Festival, in 1999 and 2000, the collective participated in the Biennial of Young Creators of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), in African festivals in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has exchanged experiences with groups from Mozambique.
Known for the characters of Adviser Avô Ngola and Miss Vissolela, the Colectivo de Artes Julu is made up of six actors: Peroteu de Jesus, Manuel Teixeira, António José, Conceição Diamante, Domingas Mendes and Maria Cassule.
The Colectivo de Artes Julu has already contributed to the development of the Angolan community with educational awareness campaigns such as prevention on: danger from mines, violence against children, children’s rights, domestic violence, civic and electoral education, fight against malaria, HIV/ AIDS, COVID-19, anti-corruption and much more.
